The Lemosho Route is renowned for its stunning landscapes and gradual ascent, making it one of the most appealing trekking options for adventurers aiming to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. Below is an overview of the key elevations and distances throughout this extraordinary trek:

  • Starting Point: The trek commences at Lemosho Gate (2,100 meters / 6,890 feet). From here, climbers begin their ascent through lush rainforest.
  • Machame Camp: After approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) of trekking, you'll reach Machame Camp at an elevation of 3,000 meters (9,843 feet).
  • Shira Camp 1: Continuing on from Machame Camp, plan for about 8 kilometers (5 miles) to reach Shira Camp 1, which is at an elevation of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet).
  • Shira Camp 2: After exploring the Shira Plateau, trekkers can opt to hike to Shira Camp 2 (3,850 meters / 12,631 feet), approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) further.
  • Lava Tower: A highlight of the trek is Lava Tower at 4,600 meters (15,091 feet), a steep trek covering around 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) from Shira Camp 2.
  • Baranco Camp: You'll descend to Baranco Camp (3,900 meters / 12,795 feet) after reaching Lava Tower. Expect to cover about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles).
  • Karanga Camp: From Baranco, trekkers will hike approximately 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) to Karanga Camp at an elevation of 4,000 meters (13,123 feet).
  • High Camp (Barafu Camp): The trek continues to Barafu Camp (4,600 meters / 15,091 feet), covering about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles).
  • Uhuru Peak: The final ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Kilimanjaro at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet), is roughly 6 kilometers (3.7 miles) from Barafu Camp. This challenging section typically takes several hours overnight.
  • Descent: After reaching the summit, trekkers descend back to Mweka Camp (3,100 meters / 10,171 feet), covering approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles).
